A Red Seal exam is based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard for the trade. The standard describes the skills and knowledge required to perform the duties of the trade. Each standard is divided into Major Work Activities, which are divided into Tasks, which are divided into sub-tasks.

Major Work Activity A - Performs common occupational skills - 24 questions
Major Work Activity B - Performs site preparation - 38 questions
Major Work Activity C - Installs air and material handling systems - 41 questions
Major Work Activity D - Installs roofing and specialty products - 10 questions
Major Work Activity E - Performs maintenance and repair - 7 questions
