The Canada Apprentice Loan

The Canada Apprentice Loan provides up to $4,000 per period of technical training to apprentices in Red Seal trades to help them complete their training.

Application deadline: Apprentices can apply up to 2 days before they complete their technical training. Visit the Canada Apprentice Loan Online Service for more details and to apply online.

The Canada Apprentice Loan is not offered in Quebec. Please contact Quebec – Student Financial Assistance for alternative support measures available to you.

Employment Insurance

Apprentices may also be eligible for Employment Insurance during periods of in-school apprenticeship training.

Tax Deductions and Credits for Apprentices and Tradespersons

  • Tradesperson’s Tools deduction - If you have purchased eligible tools to earn employment income as a tradesperson or apprentice, you may be able to deduct their cost, including any goods and services tax (GST), provincial sales tax (PST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) you paid.
  • Apprentice mechanic tools deduction - You may also be able to deduct a part of the cost of eligible tools you bought to earn employment income as an eligible apprentice mechanic.
  • Tuition Tax Credit and licensing examination fees - If you have eligible tuition fees, as well as certain licencing examination fees, you may be able to claim them on your income tax and benefits return.
  • Education amount - If you have received a tax certificate from your educational institution, you may be able to claim the education amount.
  • Textbook amount - If you qualify for either the full-time or part-time education amounts, you may also be able to claim the textbook tax credit.
  • Labour Mobility Deduction - This deduction may be available to a tradesperson or apprentice and allow them to claim eligible temporary relocation expenses paid during the 2022 and subsequent taxation years.

Tax Credits for Employers

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit

The Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit for employers that is equal to 10% of the eligible salaries and wages payable to eligible apprentices. Maximum credit is $2,000 for each eligible apprentice.
