To promote the growth of trades, many financial supports are available to apprentices, tradespeople and those who hire apprentices.

Government of Canada Financial Incentives

Apprentices

The Canada Apprentice Loan

The Canada Apprentice Loan provides up to $4,000 per period of technical training to apprentices in Red Seal trades to help them complete their training.

Application deadline: Apprentices can apply up to 2 days before they complete their technical training. Visit the Canada Apprentice Loan Online Service for more details and to apply online.

Note:

The Canada Apprentice Loan is not offered in Quebec. Please contact Quebec – Student Financial Assistance for alternative support measures available to you.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

Changes to the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant will end on March 31, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

The Government of Canada will continue to support apprentices financially as they are unemployed and progress through their technical training. Apprentices can access Employment Insurance benefits and up to $20,000 in interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans. Apprentices can apply for a CAL as early as 3 months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.

Project funding for organizations providing apprenticeship support to individuals is available under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy.

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per person.

The grant is for registered apprentices who successfully complete the first or second year/level (or equivalent) of an apprenticeship program for a designated Red Seal trade.

Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG)

Apprentices can access up to $16,000 in Employment Insurance benefits and up to $20,000 in interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans. Apprentices can apply for a CAL as early as 3 months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.

Employment Insurance

Apprentices may also be eligible for Employment Insurance during periods of in-school apprenticeship training.

Tradespersons

Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction

The Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction is an Annual tax deduction of up to $500 to help tradespersons cover the costs of new tools necessary for their trade. See the trades section of the Canada Revenue Agency website for details.

Employers

Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit

The Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit for employers that is equal to 10% of the eligible salaries and wages payable to eligible apprentices. Maximum credit is $2,000 for each eligible apprentice.
