Harmonization of the Red Seal Sprinkler Fitter Trade and Announcement of Change to Official Red Seal Trade Name

March 31, 2017

The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) would like to thank industry and training stakeholders for their contribution and support to the harmonization of apprenticeship training for the Sprinkler Fitter trade (formerly called Sprinkler System Installer). As part of this initiative, there has been consensus on substantive alignment across the country on the trade name, total training hours, number of training levels and sequencing of technical training content.

During the course of consultations on harmonizing this trade, industry requested a change to the official Red Seal trade name from Sprinkler System Installer to Sprinkler Fitter.  After surveying industry across Canada, this change was officially approved by CCDA on February 20, 2017. The French Red Seal trade name remains the same (mécanicien / mécanicienne en protection-incendie). Each province and territory will undertake their own respective trade board, regulatory and legislative processes to change the provincial/territorial trade names as required.

For details on your province or territory’s implementation plan on harmonization and the name change, please contact your apprenticeship authority.
